(1790-1867)
Galician rabbi. He was born in Lemberg. He was a rabbi in Tarnopol from 1837 to 1840, when he was appointed chief rabbi of Prague. He was attacked by the Hasidim and the ultra-Orthodox for his enlightened approach to Jewish study, which laid the foundation for modern Jewish scholarship. He wrote studies of Jewish scholars of the gaonic period, began a talmudic encyclopaedia, and trans-lated European poetry into Hebrew. He was also known as Shir, a name derived from his initials.
